Dia de los Muertos, Old Mesilla Visit

 

Last weekend, we decided to take the afternoon off to gather up friends and customers to meet down in Old Mesilla to attend Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead which is a holiday typically celebrated the last weekend of October of the first weekend of November that invites loved ones together in remembrance and honor those who have passed.  The tradition originated some 3,000 years ago among the Aztecs, who believed that death is a natural part of life and should be honored and celebrated.  It kind of gave off a Halloween-type vibe initially until you realize the deep meaning and tone with a cheerful and light-hearted tribute to loved ones.  Hosted on the Plaza Square, the event with filled with artisans, homemade alters, music, food, and performances.  We truly enjoyed shopping with all the vendors and taking pictures of altars with authentic music in the background.  If you hang around to 7 p.m. Saturday night, you can even renew your vows!  Just to be on the safe side we made reservations at Peppers right next door and enjoyed a wonderful lunch completing another field trip. We highly recommend supporting this annual event which is sponsored by the nonprofit Calavera Coalition.

Sierra Vista Growers Visit

 

The other day we decided to take work off early and head down to Sierra Vista Growers in Anthony to purchase a few plants.  The obvious route to take was to start in Mesilla down Hwy. 28 taking advantage of the beautiful pecan tree canopies and all the other agriculture growing along the way including cotton, peppers, and alfalfa.  Not to mention, the little historic villages along the way.  15 miles south of Mesilla lies a quaint little farming community with a beautiful church as its centerpiece and Chope’s Bar & Café.  Stopping there for lunch is an absolute must, offering the best chili relleno dish you’ll ever have.  We prefer the bar side to the dining side because we get such a kick out of the locals and the service is outstanding!

After an awesome lunch, we were off to Sierra Vista Growers just a few miles down the road.  We hadn’t been there in years, so we were excited to venture through the sprawling property of plants, bushes, and tree options.  It didn’t disappoint, we forgot the pricing almost seemed to be wholesale considering what we are used to paying at the big box stores. We ended up purchasing a couple of huge Bottle Brushes for $39.00 ea., 5’ tall blooming Esperanza’s that were thick and healthy for $29.00 ea. And a few decorative pepper plants to display around the house during the Holidays for $10 ea.  We are both plant fanatics and the two hours spent there was so much fun!  So, if you would like to drive down scenic Hwy 28, catch a great lunch at Chope’s, and buy a few plants at Sierra Vista Growers, it’s a wonderful afternoon field trip!
